Halitosis, or bad breath, has a number of various causes, and these are not confined to the mouth or teeth. Other causes may include stomach and lung illnesses, throat infections or other illnesses such as diabetes. Patients may have a real or supposed complaint.
In cases of halitosis, the dentist must conduct a thorough examination in order to determine the exact cause of the smell and to guide the patient accordingly. Oral causes of halitosis can be caused by tooth-decay, tartar or badly done or worn tooth-restorations. As long as these causes are removed properly the successful treatment of halitosis is possible.
